Helmet Shaping Toolchain is a bespoke helmet surfacing service for generating ultra-smooth, Class A NURBS surface blanks for helmets and headgear.

HST runs custom sessions to create refined helmet surface sets for each client, providing starting geometry that is meant to be developed into their own parametric shells. These are fair, unquilted surfaces built to stay as simple and continuous as the form will allow, with the geometric quality expected of serious Class A work.

HST calls these layered surface sets Onion Skin Strata.

The term describes a family of nested helmet surfaces that starts with the surface defining the headform and radiates outward into the final exterior envelope, carrying the internal shapes, variations, and reveals along the way.

In technical terms, Onion Skin Strata is a family of Class A NURBS surfaces organized as a minimal patch network across the full helmet envelope. Unlike quilted patchwork, where cuts and intersecting geometry create a web of junctions that must be resolved, HST produces essentially continuous, multi-span surfaces that cover the helmet with as few surfaces as possible — often a complete helmet pod, or full onion envelope, in just two surfaces. Those surfaces are intended as clean blanks that can be sectioned, thickened, and parameterized into liners, shells, ribs, and other structural or visual elements.

Sessions are conducted by video conference or on location. Each session produces clean single and double surface helmet geometry — correctly proportioned to the headform, protection layer thicknesses resolved, coverage constraints accounted for from the start. These surfaces are built as a foundation: ready for the customer’s own downstream detailing, refinement, and development into prototype and production files.

HST is for helmet brands, industrial designers, and development teams that need exceptionally refined starting geometry instead of rough concept surfacing or fully resolved production CAD. It is especially relevant when the shape language matters, when fairness and continuity matter, and when the project needs a clean parametric blank that can support later design decisions.

The service operates as a neutral geometry provider across the full market. Independent studios, OEM teams, film departments, and game studios are all served from the same system, on the same terms. No design opinion carried in, no design intelligence retained. The studio or brand remains the visible author. The geometry leaves with the customer.

Use HST OSS when your industrial design pipeline needs a clean, refined starting place to build helmets from. It provides a surface basis that can be roughed out quickly in geometry, reviewed early in physical form, and then worked down through the Onion Skin Strata into the different layers that support the final helmet.

By cutting through layers of the onion, HST OSS can be used to explore variations in production geometry quickly while keeping the overall surface system coherent. It fits best when a company needs a fast running start and wants a handoff-ready geometric foundation that remains useful from prototyping through production development.
